In recent years, the prospect of home recording has become more feasible than ever before due to the affordability of more powerful computers and digital audio workstations. This has been of major benifit to both musicians and music enthusiasts alike; exposing a world of music that may have never left the bedroom otherwise. Having said that, there are a number of things that the home recording enthusiast should consider before opting to venture down this route.
First and foremost; expense! They say all you need for a good vocal recording is a decent vocal mic, a nice pre-amp, high fidelity converters, a fairly powerful computer, a high resolution recording platform and an acoustically treated/ balanced room in which to record. From my experience of building a basic home production suite, the home recording enthusiast must be willing to part with at least €1,000 to €1,500 on equipment in order to attain a ‘reasonably good’ or ‘acceptable’ recording.
Another consideration is the amount of time it takes to become acquainted with recording equipment. Depending on the individual’s technical intuition, basic recording equipment can be fairly straight forward to operate. However, being able to operate the equipment is one thing; being musically adept at applying it is a whole other story, which requires a wealth of audio technical knowledge and experience – a skill set that simply can’t be learned over night.
Taking all of this into consideration, the benifits of hiring a professional studio and engineer soon become clear. Firstly, the presence of a competent engineer allows for the artist to focus on their performance while the engineer looks after the technical aspects of the session. Having worked with a wide variety of high end equipment , I am confident in operationg most industry standart technology. What’s more, being an experienced musician, composer & producer, I can offer creative guidance throughout your project.
